Ethan Roberts - Closing in on mound workRoberts (elbow) progressed to throwing off flat ground from 105 feet before the end of spring training, MLB.com reports.

ImpactThe Cubs haven't provided any recent updates on Roberts within the past month, but unless he's suffered an unreported setback in his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last July, he's presumably increased his throwing distance off flat ground over the last few weeks and could soon be ready to resume mound work. Given the timing of his elbow procedure, Roberts may face an uphill battle to get back in a minor-league rehab game before the end of the season, but he should be fully cleared ahead of next year's spring training.

Ben Brown - Bumps up to Triple-AThe Cubs promoted Brown from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.

ImpactBrown received the call to Triple-A after the Cubs summoned Caleb Kilian from Iowa to make a spot start this past weekend. Though Kilian has since been optioned back to Iowa, Brown looks like he'll keep a spot in the Triple-A rotation after he was unchallenged over his first four starts this season at Double-A. Over 20 innings with Tennessee, Brown compiled an 0.45 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 30:6 K:BB.

Ben Leeper - Rehabbing from third elbow surgeryLeeper announced April 3 via his personal Instagram account that he underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

ImpactThe Tommy John surgery is the third of Leeper's career and creates significant doubts about his ability to find success once he completes his rehab and recovery process, which will likely carry over into next summer. The 25-year-old reliever, who signed with the Cubs in 2020 after going undrafted out of Oklahoma State, posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 57:17 K:BB in 46 innings in 2022 at Triple-A Iowa.

Alexander Canario - On Triple-A's 60-day ILTriple-A Iowa transferred Canario (ankle/shoulder) from its 7-day injured list to the 60-day IL on April 13.

ImpactCanario's 2023 debut looks like it'll have to wait until at least June while he works his way back from offseason surgeries on his left ankle and left shoulder. The 22-year-old outfielder's recovery from the shoulder procedure is likely the greater concern at this time, but he's at least fortunate that the surgery wasn't performed on his throwing arm. Canario reached Triple-A for the first time late in the 2022 season, slashing .231/.386/.538 with six home runs and three stolen bases across his 84 plate appearances for Iowa.

Jameson Taillon - Throwing again TuesdayTaillon (groin) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

ImpactThe upcoming side session marks Taillon's second since he was placed on the 15-day injured list April 20 with a left groin strain. Though the Cubs were initially optimistic that Taillon would be ready to come off the IL when first eligible -- which would have been Tuesday -- the right-hander instead looks like he'll remain on the shelf for another week. The Cubs turned to Caleb Kilian over the weekend to replace Taillon in the rotation, but because Kilian has since been optioned to Triple-A Iowa, the team will likely call up another pitcher to fill Taillon's next turn through the rotation, which comes up Thursday in Washington.
