ImpactEickhoff's contract was selected ahead of his season debut Wednesday, but he could hardly have done a worse job with his audition to stick around on a more permanent basis. In 4.1 innings against the Cubs, he allowed 10 runs on 10 hits. It's unlikely there will be much of a market for Eickhoff's services on the waiver wire considering that he's a 31-year-old who owns a 7.19 ERA since the start of the 2018 season. Austin Brice was called up to take his place on the roster.

Austin Brice - Contract selected FridayBrice's contract was selected from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

ImpactBrice joined the Pirates on a minor-league deal this spring and posted a 3.04 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 26.2 innings over 24 relief appearances in Indianapolis to begin the year. He hasn't been very effective in the majors over the last two seasons, as he recorded a 6.21 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 33.1 innings over 34 appearances (one start) for the Red Sox. However, he'll have a chance to prove himself in Pittsburgh after Jerad Eickhoff was designated for assignment Friday.

Heineman collected multiple hits in a start for the third time this season, highlighted by an RBI single in the sixth frame. Despite the decent performance, he's hitting a dreadful .184/.244/.237 across 84 plate appearances on the season, although that's still a small step up from Perez's .127/.184/.254 line.

ImpactCruz recorded an RBI double in the sixth inning and has driven in at least one run in all four games since arriving in Pittsburgh. Though he's yet to go yard in the majors, the 23-year-ols has two extra-base hits, four runs scored and seven RBI across 18 at-bats. Cruz has hit primarily in the bottom third of the order, though that could change as the season progresses.
