Nick Burdi - Ready for live sessionBurdi (appendectomy) is scheduled to face hitters in live batting practice Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ImpactAfter completing a couple of bullpen sessions last week, Burdi will enter the next phase of his rehab program as he ramps back up from the emergency appendectomy he underwent May 24. If all goes well Tuesday, Burdi could be cleared to head out on an extended minor-league rehab assignment as soon as this weekend.

Ethan Roberts - Ready for bullpen workRoberts (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ImpactRoberts, who is working his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent July 13, 2022, recently finished up a "de-load" period of his throwing program in which he was limited to throwing off flat ground, according to MLB.com. The right-hander will start up the ramp-up process Tuesday with a side session, and he should gradually increase the frequency and intensity of his bullpen work over the next few weeks before progressing to facing hitters. Roberts still has a chance to pitch in games in 2023, though any appearances he makes will likely come in the minors rather than with the Cubs.

Mike Tauchman - Remains on bench vs. leftyTauchman is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds.
ImpactThe lefty-hitting Tauchman will take a seat for the second day in a row while the Reds bring southpaw Andrew Abbott to the bump for the series opener. With Tauchman on the bench, Cody Bellinger will draw the start in center field and Trey Mancini will pick up a start at first base.

Pete Crow-Armstrong - One step away from majorsCrow-Armstrong was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
ImpactThe Cubs' center fielder of the future, Crow-Armstrong had a 150 wRC+ and 11.9 percent walk rate since May 23 and he hit .368 with four home runs and four steals in his last 10 games, so it was time for a new challenge. The 21-year-old outfielder has a chance to aid fantasy managers in all five standard roto categories. It's not inconceivable that the Cubs could bring him up in September if he doesn't skip a beat at Triple-A, but it's probably more likely Crow-Armstrong debuts early next season.

Drew Smyly - Returning to starting roleSmyly is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Reds at Wrigley Field, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ImpactSmyly was never removed from the rotation, but the Cubs elected to deploy him behind an opener in both of this last two turns after he had posted a 9.35 ERA and 2.02 WHIP in his preceding four starts. Though Smyly showed improved results in his most recent two outings working out of the bullpen (5.63 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 11:2 K:BB in eight innings), the Cubs will give the lefty another chance to prove himself in a traditional starting role. Multiple reports have suggested that the surging Cubs won't be dealing staff ace Marcus Stroman prior to Tuesday's trade deadline while they pursue a division title or wild-card spot, but it's unclear if the team will seek out potential upgrades to Smyly ahead of the deadline.
