Lars Nootbaar - May play regularly versus rightiesNootbaar will start in right field and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ImpactNootbaar was on the bench for the entire three-game series with the Cubs over the weekend, but he could temporarily step into a regular role versus right-handed pitching after fellow outfielder Harrison Bader (foot) was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. With Bader joining Tyler O'Neill (hamstring) and Corey Dickerson (calf) on the IL, the Cardinals' outfield depth in being tested at the moment, and Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan appear to be the most logical candidates to play alongside Dylan Carlson in most games. The lefty-hitting Nootbaar could give way to Juan Yepez against left-handed pitching, however.

Iván Herrera - Receives second straight startHerrera will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ImpactSince Yadier Molina (knee) remains without a clear timeline to return from the injured list and with Andrew Knizner sitting on a lowly .525 OPS through 136 plate appearances on the season, the Cardinals may be ready to give Herrera glimpse as their primary catcher. The 22-year-old rookie will pick up his second straight start after going 2-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs. Prior to being called up from the minors following Molina's placement on the IL, Herrera showcased a dash of pop (.145 ISO) and strong plate discipline (12.7 percent walk rate, 14.7 percent strikeout rate) over his 129 plate appearances with Triple-A Memphis.

Andrew Knizner - Remains out of lineupKnizner isn't starting Monday against Miami, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ImpactKnizner went 0-for-7 with two strikeouts over his last three games and will be out of the lineup for a second consecutive matchup. Ivan Herrera is starting behind the plate and batting ninth.

Conner Capel - Receives first MLB promotionThe Cardinals selected Capel's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
ImpactThe 25-year-old is expected to fill a depth role in the St. Louis outfield after the Cardinals placed Harrison Bader (foot) on the 10-day injured list Monday. Capel saw action at all three outfield spots for Memphis while slashing .271/.361/.466 with nine home runs and 16 stolen bases across 252 plate appearances.

Jack Flaherty - Returns to injured listFlaherty was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain Monday.
ImpactFlaherty didn't make his season debut until mid-June due to a shoulder injury which first appeared back in mid-March. He made just three short and ineffective starts, posting a 5.63 ERA, 2.12 WHIP and 6:9 K:BB in eight innings, and he'll now head right back to the injured list with renewed shoulder troubles. He'll be eligible to return shortly before the All-Star break, but a minimum-length stay seems unlikely given the way his season has gone thus far.

Harrison Bader - Shelved with plantar fasciitisThe Cardinals placed Bader on the 10-day injured list Monday due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
ImpactSt. Louis hadn't provided any indication that Bader was nursing any sort of injury during the club's weekend series with the Cubs, but he'll become the third St. Louis outfielder to head to the IL, joining Tyler O'Neill (hamstring) and Corey Dickerson (calf). The Cardinals called up Conner Capel from Triple-A Memphis to add a healthy body to the outfield, but the trio of Lars Nootbaar, Dylan Carlson and Brendan Donovan could be manager Oliver Marmol's preferred outfield configuration while Bader is on the shelf. The 28-year-old Bader currently ranks tied for sixth in the majors with 15 stolen bases on the season.

Zack Thompson - Takes extra-inning loss SundayThompson (1-1) took the extra-inning loss Sunday versus the Cubs. He allowed an unearned run on three hits and struck out two over 1.2 innings without walking a batter.
ImpactThompson was responsible for an RBI single from Willson Contreras, and the Cardinals couldn't get even in the bottom of the 10th inning. With Genesis Cabrera on the COVID-19 injured list, Thompson is expected to fill a multi-inning role in critical spots in games in the short term. He has a 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB in six appearances (one start) spanning 16.1 innings this year. Jack Flaherty (shoulder) made an early exit Sunday, and if he's forced to miss time again, Thompson would be among the shortlist of options to join the rotation.
