Settles for no-decision Bassitt didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the A's, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.
Impact Oakland jumped on the right-hander for three runs in the top of the first inning, but Bassitt shook it off and left the game after 83 pitches (53 strikes) with the score tied 4-4. Even so, it's the third straight start in which he hasn't worked more than five innings, a stretch in which he's been tagged for 15 earned runs and four homers in only 11.2 frames. Bassitt will try to get back on track in his next outing, likely to come at home next week against the Giants.

Impact Bassitt failed to get through the fourth inning for the second straight start, getting yanked at 73 pitches after giving up four hits, a walk and a run in the fourth frame. Sunday's start was yet another hiccup for Bassitt, who has struggled mightily in his last four starts after getting off to a good start to 2023, sporting a 6.84 ERA with six homers allowed over his last five starts (26.1 innings). He'll look to get back on track next week in an expected matchup with Oakland.

Impact All of the damage against Bassitt came via the home-run ball - a pair of two-run shots before Gunnar Henderson blasted a grand slam in the third inning. It was a tough night for the 34-year-old Bassitt, who allowed just two runs in 15.2 innings over his previous two outings. His ERA is now up to 4.02 with a 1.13 WHIP and 75:2 K:BB through 14 starts (85 innings) this season. Bassitt is currently lined up for a tough road matchup against the Rangers in his next outing.

Impact Bassitt completed a season-high eight innings and didn't issue a walk for a second straight game, posting 14 strikeouts during the stretch. Aside from two horrible outings, the right-hander has been sharp during his first season with the Blue Jays, recording a 1.69 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 65:24 K:BB across his other 11 starts (74.2 innings). Even when you include his bad nights, his overall 3.29 ERA and 1.01 WHIP are still very respectable. Bassitt will look to stay sharp during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the opener of a three-game set in Baltimore.

Impact All things considered, Bassitt's ability to maintain his focus and shut down the team he pitched for in 2022 was uncanny. The veteran right-hander had to wait out a 90-minute rain delay, and once he took the mound he pitched like a man who had a plane to catch -- which in fact he did, as his wife was back in Toronto about to give birth to their second child. Bassitt fired 64 of 101 pitches for strikes and retired 14 straight Mets at one point, a streak ended by a Starling Marte single in the seventh inning. The quality start was Bassitt's ninth in 12 outings this season, and he'll take a 3.41 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 65:26 K:BB through 74 innings into his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Astros.
