Crushes two Opening Day homers Cron went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and five total RBI in Thursday's 7-2 win against San Diego.

Impact Cron was arguably the offensive standout of Opening Day, as he was the only player in the league to go deep twice. The veteran first baseman put the Rockies on the board with a first-inning single, gave the team a 4-2 lead with a fifth-inning three-run homer and went deep again with a solo shot in the seventh. Cron has hit 25-plut homers in each of his last four full seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign), and he appears well on his way to putting up big power numbers again in 2023.

Impact Cron will check back into Colorado's spring lineup for the first time since March 14 after a bout with back spasms prompted the club to exercise caution with him over the past two weeks. The veteran first baseman apparently checked out fine after hitting high-velocity pitching Saturday, so the back issue shouldn't be anything that hinders him at the plate moving forward.

Impact It's another step in the right direction for Cron, who has missed most of the spring while dealing with back spasms. The slugger also went through workouts Friday before the contest, and he appears to be on the right track towards getting on the field for the Rockies before Opening Day. A trip to the injured list to begin the season cannot be ruled out yet, however.

Impact It appears to be a day-to-day situation at this point, although the Rockies aren't providing a timetable for Cron's return. Mike Moustakas and Harold Castro have handled first base the last two days and Michael Toglia would also be a candidate to see time there if Cron's absence drags on.

Impact Cron is locked into the first base job in Colorado and has established a fairly clear baseline of performance for the last several seasons. That makes it difficult to be overly concerned by his lack of production this spring, particularly so long as he maintains his health.
