Three-inning save Schmidt picked up the save in Sunday's 6-0 victory over the Orioles, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two over three innings.

Impact Schmidt saw his first action for the Yankees since June 22. It comes after the Yankees lost multi-inning reliever Michael King to an elbow injury. Schmidt took on a similar role to King in Sunday's contest, earning a nine-out save. He threw 36 of 56 pitches for strikes, and while he allowed two hits and two walks, Schmidt was able to keep the O's off the board. It was his first save of the year. The righty reliever will take a 2.67 ERA into his next appearance.

Impact After striking out five while tossing three scoreless innings last Thursday in a spot start against the Rays, Schmidt moved back to the bullpen this week when Luis Severino was cleared to return from the COVID-19-related injured list. Schmidt appeared in both of the past two games and gave up one earned run over 1.2 innings, and he'll now be moved off the 26-man active roster with the Yankees needing to clear room for waiver pickup Albert Abreu. Impact Schmidt received a spot start Thursday after Luis Severino was briefly placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Schmidt had not thrown more than 3.1 innings in any outing this season, so he was limited in length. However, he was very effective and racked up eight swinging strikes on 50 pitches while allowing a single as his only hit. Schmidt had already been pitching well out of the bullpen this season, and after the stellar showing in the starting role, he now maintains a 2.82 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 22.1 frames. Severino was activated from the IL following Thursday's game, so Schmidt will head back to the bullpen with Severino in line to take the hill when his next turn in the rotation comes up next week.
