Handed first loss Rea (0-1) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks over five innings Monday, striking out one and taking a loss against Detroit.
Impact Nearly all of the damage against Rea came on Nick Maton's three-run shot in the third inning. Rea later coughed up one more run in the fifth during his lackluster outing. After a solid season debut, he's been tagged with eight runs over 10 innings in his last two starts, ballooning his ERA to 5.17. Rea is projected for a home matchup with the Angels this weekend.

Sticking in rotation Rea will remain in Milwaukee's rotation and is scheduled to start Tuesday in Seattle, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
Impact With Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) out indefinitely and Aaron Ashby (shoulder) already ruled out for most of the season, the Brewers rotation depth is getting tested early on. Rea, 32, tossed seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and zero walks at Triple-A before giving up one run with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings Thursday in San Diego. His four-seam fastball velocity was around 93 mph in his first start, which is right where it was in 2021 before he went to pitch in Japan for a year, but he added an 84-mph sweeper that he threw 22.9 percent of the time Thursday.

Excels in spot start Rea tossed 5.2 innings against San Diego on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out six batters. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Rea was called up from Triple-A for a spot start to face the club he pitched for in 2015 and 2016. The right-hander did about as well as the Brewers could have hoped, allowing just a single run (on a Manny Machado solo homer) over 5.2 frames. Rea spent the 2022 season in Japan and signed a minor-league deal with Milwaukee during this past offseason, and he got the opportunity to start Thursday with Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) on the IL and the Brewers opting to give their other starters an extra day of rest. It remains to be seen if he'll get another turn in the rotation -- even if he does, he's a risky fantasy play given his career 4.78 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.

Moving on from Cubs The Cubs released Rea on Monday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact Rea previously signed a one-year, $702,500 deal with the Cubs in December to avoid arbitration, but he asked the team to terminate his contract just weeks later so that he could pursue opportunities in Japan, according to Bastian. The 30-year-old right-hander should get a decent pay raise if he heads to Japan, where he'll also likely get the opportunity to serve as a frontline starter in Nippon Professional Baseball. Rea worked as a swingman for the Cubs in 2020, making nine appearances (two starts) and finishing with a 5.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 10:2 K:BB over 14 innings.

Impact Rea's previous appearance came as a starter last weekend versus Milwaukee, when he joined the rotation on short notice after Tyler Chatwood (back) was placed on the 10-day injured list.
