Getting closer to 100 percent Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Carroll (back) is "very close" to being fully recovered and returning to games, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Impact Lovullo noted that Wednesday had been the target date for Carroll to return to action, but the decision was made to push the outfielder back a bit so that they can be sure to put the back issue totally behind him. Carroll had to be removed from Sunday's Cactus League game against the Rangers because of the injury.

Carroll has been excellent so far this spring, going 6-for-12 with three home runs and a pair of stolen bases.

Not concerned with back injury Carroll said that he isn't concerned about his back tightness that caused him to be removed from Sunday's spring game against Texas, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Impact Carroll went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced by Jorge Barrosa in right field in the third inning. Carroll will not play against the Cubs on Monday, and with the Diamondbacks scheduled for an off-day Tuesday, he'll look to rejoin the lineup for Wednesday's bout against the Giants.

Adjusts bat position Carroll tweaked his bat positioning when setting up in the batters box, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Impact This was a tweak Carroll started during the second half of 2024, and he continued to work on it over the offseason. He previously kept the bat flat over his left shoulder before changing to a more upright position. "We talked about, I guess, shortening the path to the ball," manager Torey Lovullo said. "Creating better angles to certain pitches. It's not hindering his ability to hit the pitch as well as he's normally hitting, so he feels like that's a good starting spot for him." Carroll swatted his first spring home run Monday, turning on a high breaking ball.

Impact Carroll was part of a contingent of Diamondbacks regulars that made their Cactus League debuts Saturday. He'll land in right or center field, depending on whether Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy wins a starting spot in the outfield. But where Carroll lands defensively is of less concern than his season-opening slump in 2024 that lingered through the first half (.635 OPS). He eventually turned it around in the second half, posting a .919 OPS and reestablishing the reputation earned in 2023 when Carroll won the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

Double, steal in loss Carroll went 1-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-0 loss to the Padres.

Impact Carroll had one of two hits for Arizona, which was unable to deliver a key hit with runners in scoring position. He doubled to lead off the sixth inning and moved to third on a double steal but was stranded there. Carroll has hit safely in five straight, going 6-for-19 with a double, home runs, three walks, two steals, two RBI and three runs scored.

Homer, steal in loss Carroll went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks and a stolen base in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Padres.

Impact Carroll has hit safely in four straight games, going 5-for-15 in that span. His homer Friday was his first extra-base hit since his two-homer game in Colorado on Sept. 18. The outfielder has played in a career-high 156 games this season, producing 22 homers, 33 steals, 74 RBI, 120 runs scored and a .232/.313/.430 slash line, results well off the marks he established in 2023. However, he has a manageable 19.1 percent strikeout rate, so most of his downturn in production can be attributed to poor luck.

Impact Carroll delivered a run on a sacrifice fly as part of Arizona's three-run second inning then trotted home on Pavin Smith's three-run home run in the eighth. Carroll had been scuffling prior to getting a day off Sunday and has bounced back with hits in three straight contests. The year started poorly for Carroll and lingered through much of the season, but a torrid August (1.042 OPS, 11 home runs) has re-established his bona fides as a threat. Through 155 games, the same amount he played in his Rookie of the Year season in 2023, Carroll has 21 homers, 14 triples, 73 RBI, 32 steals and 119 runs scored. His hitting profile didn't change much from last season, and it could be argued that any drop-off in 2024 was attributable to bad luck (.258 BABIP).

Impact The Diamondbacks clarified that Carroll's absence is not injury-related, and that he and Christian Walker are simply resting up. Carroll has surged to a .259/.352/.585 slash line, 16 homers and 14 steals since the All-Star break, after struggling to the tune of a .212/.301/.334 line in the first half.
