Impact The righty has yielded one earned run in 3.1 innings of relief with the big-league club this season. Abbott has struggled at Triple-A though, pitching to a 6.03 ERA in 31.1 innings. He's been plagued by the long-ball, allowing eight at that level in 2021. Abbott may be called upon for some middle-innings work Wednesday, as spot starter Robert Stock is not expected to have an extended outing against the Mets.

Returns to Triple-A Abbott was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Impact The 25-year-old was called up over the weekend and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk over 3.1 innings during his first taste of the majors. Alec Mills (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Impact Abbott was called up from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day and was effective in his MLB debut. The 25-year-old had a 6.39 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in five starts for Iowa before getting the call, so expectations should be tempered, though he at least made a good first impression. Abbott will serve out of the Cubs' bullpen for the time being but could be an option for some spot starts.

Impact The Cubs added Abbott to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and he'll now be available to make his major-league debut out of the bullpen. The right-hander made five starts for Triple-A Iowa to begin the year and posted a 6.39 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 25.1 innings. Although Abbott will serve as a reliever to begin his time in the big leagues, he could also fill in as a starter if needed.
