Impact Cleveland had little trouble putting traffic on the bases, and Dunning couldn't escape trouble without allowing three runs in the third inning. The right-hander ends the season with a 4.51 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 114:43 K:BB through 117.2 innings in his first full season. He should be good to go for a full starter's workload in 2022 after working abbreviated appearances after a stay on the COVID-19 injured list in late August and early September.

Impact The right-hander struggled a bit, throwing just 37 of 71 pitches for strikes, and he came up one out shy of completing the fifth inning. It wasn't a bad start for Dunning, but the five walks were a season high. He's pitched to a 4.32 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 111:42 K:BB through 114.2 innings this season. Impact Dunning was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Friday and, as manager Chris Woodward told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the plan was to have him throw an inning of relief Friday. Dunning, who should get another three or four starts before the end of the season, will gradually build up to throw 80 or 90 pitches. That aligns with the organization's season-long plan for Dunning, who has been kept on a pitch limit. The right-hander entered 2021 having thrown just 34 innings since 2018.

Impact Dunning has been on the COVID-19 IL since Aug. 25, with his two-plus-week layoff suggesting that he most likely tested positive for the virus. The right-hander is in the process of regaining conditioning, and he appears to be feeling good after he tossed 23 pitches in a simulated game Monday. The Rangers' plans for Dunning over the rest of the season aren't entirely clear, but if he does in fact return Friday, he'll likely be limited to a bullpen role or working as an opener in front of Glenn Otto. Since Texas isn't sending Dunning out on a minor-league rehab assignment in which he would be able to build up his pitch count, he may not fill a traditional starting role for the remaining three weeks of September.
