Implodes Wednesday Bednar (3-3) got the loss Wednesday after he blew a save, surrendering three runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning in a 5-4 extra-inning defeat to the Marlins.
Impact Bednar was called upon for the second straight night to protect a late lead, but Wednesday was a far different story than the day prior. After being entrusted with a 4-2 lead when he entered in the bottom of the 10th, Bednar allowed three singles and two runs before uncorking a game-ending wild pitch with two outs. The blown save was his fourth of the year and first in his last six save opportunities. Overall, Bednar has converted 16 saves in 20 chances, generating a 3.16 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 56 punchouts over 42.2 innings in 36 appearances this season.

Impact The 27-year-old closer has looked a little vulnerable lately, giving up runs in four of his last 10 appearances with a 6.97 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB through 10.1 innings over that stretch, but Bednar didn't falter Tuesday. Barring a deadline trade to a contender, he figures to remain the ninth-inning job in Pittsburgh down the stretch even with some occasional lapses.

Impact Bednar was tasked with protecting a one-run lead and successfully did so against the top of Milwaukee's order. The 27-year-old has tossed four scoreless innings in July while recording four saves after concluding June with two poor performances. Bednar's owns a steady 2.25 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 40 innings, making him one of the stronger closers in the majors.

Impact Bednar surrendered a one-out double to Mike Moustakas but otherwise pitched a clean frame to tally his 14th save of the season. Since allowing five earned runs across 1.1 innings and two appearances in late June, Bednar has turned in three consecutive scoreless appearances -- he earned saves in each -- to get back on track. He has maintained a strong 2.31 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 52:12 K:BB across 39 frames on the season and is locked into the closer role in Pittsburgh.

He pitched an uneventful frame which prevented the heart of the Yankees order from coming to the plate to earn his 13th save of the season. It was the second strong appearance in a row for Bednar who boasts a quality 2.47 ERA and 1.00 WHIP . The Pirates' poor record will limit Bednar's save totals but the 27-year-old right-hander is the man who manager Derek Shelton will turn to whenever save opportunities arise.

Impact Bednar appeared to have the night off, but Milwaukee scored twice in the eighth inning to necessitate his services. After struggling in his most recent appearance Thursday, the 27-year-old issued a four-pitch walk to Christian Yelich to lead off the ninth. He then retired the next three Brewers in order to register his first save since June 15. Despite surrendering six runs over his prior 4.1 innings, Bednar still possess a quality 2.43 ERA and even 1.00 WHIP with 50 strikeouts through 37 innings.

Impact Bednar pitched for the first time since June 25 and was immediately inserted back into the ninth-inning role with a four-run lead. However, things didn't go according to plan from there, and he was pulled before he could record the final out of the game. It remains to be seen whether the poor performance was caused primarily by rust, or it's an indication that he's still not at full health. If Bednar becomes unavailable for an extended amount of time, Yerry De Los Santos appears to be the next man up for saves.

Impact Bednar hasn't pitched since Saturday on account of a sore lower back, an injury that may have played a part in him uncharacteristically walking two batters and surrendering two runs in a blown save during his last time on the mound. Prior to that game, Bednar had produced a 1.30 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 48:8 K:BB across 34.2 innings while notching 11 saves in 13 chances, so he should have a decent amount of job security as the Pirates' closer.
