Impact Nevin will start for the fourth time in six games and may have at least temporarily inched ahead of the likes of Zach McKinstry and Jonathan Schoop as manager A.J. Hinch's preferred option for the remaining opening in Detroit's everyday lineup. Since being called up from Triple-A Toledo, Nevin is getting on base at a .400 clip in 10 plate appearances, but he'll need to continue to excel at the dish over a larger sample of playing time before he takes firmer hold of a regular spot.

Mason Englert - Pitches well Tuesday Englert tossed three scoreless innings of relief in a 4-3 win over the Guardians during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. He allowed two hits and struck out two.
Impact After starter Matthew Boyd went five innings, the Tigers turned to Englert, and he provided some valuable length out of the bullpen. The righty lowered his ERA from 6.30 to 4.85 in the process. Englert allowed five runs in an appearance last Tuesday, but outside of that poor outing, he's been a fairly solid long reliever. He should stick in that role for the time being on a Detroit team that doesn't have a ton of other great options.

Eric Haase - Four hits in matinee Haase went 4-for-4 with a run scored in a 4-3 win over the Guardians during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Impact All four hits were singles, but Haase won't complain after entering the contest with just seven hits in 36 at-bats this season. He upped his average from .194 to .275 with the big performance, then got a well-deserved rest in the nightcap. Jake Rogers has flashed some power in the early going, though Haase should remain the primary catcher in Detroit, and he can also play some in the outfield.

Impact After rapping out three singles in the matinee, Greene accounted for the only offense in the nightcap when he took Peyton Battenfield to the opposite field in the sixth inning of a 1-0 win. The homer and the steal were each the second of the season for Greene, and the 22-year-old is now batting .262 (17-for-65) through 16 games with five RBI and 11 runs. His 5:23 BB:K remains something of an eyesore, but Greene still has plenty of time to turn his athletic tools into consistent production.

Impact Alex Lange picked up the win in the matinee, so Foley got the call in the nightcap and breezed through the top of the Cleveland order, striking out Jose Ramirez to end the game. The right-hander has arguably been Detroit's most effective reliever so far in 2023, posting a 1.13 ERA and 8:3 K:BB through eight innings with three holds, and if Lange falters as closer, Foley could be the next man up in the role.

It was Carpenter's third homer of the season, and after going 0-for-4 in the nightcap, he's batting .238 (10-for-42) on the season with five RBI and six runs in 11 games.

Impact With the score tied 3-3, Lange came in to face the bottom of the Cleveland order and worked around a two-out double by Tyler Freeman. The right-hander then got rewarded for his efforts when Kerry Carpenter launched a walkoff homer in the bottom of the frame -- the third straight game the Tigers won in walkoff fashion, tying a club record. Lange hasn't had many save opportunities so far, but he's been effective if not exactly dominant when called upon, posting a 2.35 ERA and 5:4 K:BB through 7.2 innings.
