Impact The 28-year-old received the chance to make his MLB debut late in the 2022 campaign, appearing in two games and going hitless across five plate appearances while sticking on the Tigers' active roster for less than a week. Given Lester's advanced age and lack of a prospect pedigree, it's not especially surprising that he went unclaimed off waivers after he was booted off the Tigers' 40-man roster.

Impact Rogers, who underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in September 2021, is aiming to be a full participant for spring training. He was already cleared for full hitting work shortly after the All-Star break this past season, but because he's regarded as a defense-first catcher, he wouldn't have offered much value as a designated hitter if the Tigers chose to activate him from the 60-day injured list. Expect the Tigers to reinstate him from the IL and tender him a 2023 contract before the Nov. 18 deadline, and if all goes well this offseason as he advances through his throwing progression, Rogers could be a candidate to make the Opening Day roster. With Tucker Barnhart becoming a free agent this winter, Eric Haase currently sits atop the Tigers' depth chart at catcher.

Kerry Carpenter - Should start hitting next month Carpenter (back) is scheduled to begin his normal offseason hitting progression in December, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact Assuming he experiences no setbacks in his recovery from a left lumbar spine strain once he starts hitting again later this winter, Carpenter should be back to 100 percent health well in advance of spring training. The 25-year-old pushed his way to the big leagues in the second half of this past season after mashing 30 home runs in the minors and acquitted himself well in his limited sample of MLB action. Over his 113 plate appearances, the rookie slashed .252/.310/.485 with 11 extra-base hits while maintaining walk and strikeout rates of 5.5 and 28.3 percent, respectively. Impact Skubal is on the mend from the season-ending surgery he underwent Aug. 17 to repair the flexor muscle in his left elbow. The procedure typically doesn't carry as lengthy of a recovery timeline as Tommy John surgery, but it's worth noting that former Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd had the same flexor tendon surgery Sept. 27 of last year and didn't begin a minor-league rehab assignment until more than 10 months later. Skubal won't necessarily face a similar recovery timeline, but the young left-hander should be expected to open 2023 on the injured list and miss a large chunk of the upcoming season.

Impact Jimenez closed the 2022 campaign on the 15-day injured list with a right lumbar spine strain before the Tigers reinstated him one day after the regular season ended. He's still not fully healthy, however, as he's spent the past month focusing on strengthening his core muscles to regain stability in his spine. Jimenez should start throwing later this winter and will likely enter the spring with no restrictions, but it's unclear if he'll be joining the Tigers for camp. The team will first have to decide whether or not to extend Jimenez a contract for 2023 prior to the Nov. 18 tender deadline.
