Kepler's two home runs more than enough to back up Ryan's solid start vs. DetroitMINNEAPOLIS — Oh, so that's why Joe Ryan is in the Twins' starting rotation and Michael Pineda isn't.

Andrew Chafin - Makes season debut WednesdayChafin allowed one run on two hits across an inning of relief in Wednesday's loss to the Twins. He struck out one.
ImpactChafin, who suffered a groin injury in spring training, was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday but didn't enter the game. He looked rusty in his season debut Wednesday, as he allowed back-to-back doubles to start the inning, though he escaped with only the one run allowed. Despite the tough outing, Chafin should settle into a valuable bullpen role as the team's top lefty reliever outside of closer Gregory Soto.

Michael Pineda - Can't duplicate successPineda (1-1) allowed four runs on seven hits across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Twins. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two.
ImpactFor the second straight start, Pineda went five innings, but he couldn't match his season debut of five scoreless frames. Home runs plagued the righty, as he allowed three of them, including two by Max Kepler. Pineda isn't a big strikeout guy with only four so far in 10 innings, so his margin for error is pretty slim, particularly when he's serving up long balls. The veteran will look for better results in his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Pirates.

Sonny Gray - Rehab start on tapGray (hamstring) is expected to make a rehab start with Single-A Fort Myers this weekend, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
ImpactGray will throw a bullpen session in the next couple days prior to the start with Fort Myers, which could be the final hurdle in his rehab program before being activated from the injured list. If that's the case, the 32-year-old could rejoin Minnesota's starting rotation late next week.

Miguel Sanó - Not starting WednesdaySano isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Tigers.
ImpactSano hit just .136 with an RBI, a walk and nine strikeouts over his last six appearances, and he'll be out of the lineup for the second time this year. Luis Arraez will start at first base while Trevor Larnach serves as the designated hitter.

Gary Sánchez - Still out WednesdaySanchez (abdomen) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ImpactHe'll remain on the bench for a sixth consecutive game while he contends with abdominal tightness. However, manager Rocco Baldelli said the catcher is working out on the field prior to Wednesday's matchup, and he's hopeful that Sanchez will be able to return to the lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Tigers, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
