Impact The strikeouts were impressive and German generated 15 swinging strikes among his 75 pitches, but homers by Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh -- as well as a lack of run support -- stuck the right-hander with the loss. Impact German initially looked on track to make his first start of the season in Sunday's series finale with the Giants, but the Yankees are instead turning to rookie Jhony Brito to take the hill in what will be his major-league debut. The Yankees haven't indicated that the decision to push German's first start back a couple of days was the result of a health-related setback; instead, it's plausible that he was pushed to the end of the pitching schedule due to his rough showing in spring training. Over his four Grapefruit League starts, German was tagged for 10 earned runs on 14 hits and a walk while striking out 11 over 10.1 innings.

Ugly spring outing Friday German pitched 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Tigers on Friday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out one batter.

Impact German was shelled by Detroit in the outing, and the hits against him were neither quiet nor lucky. The Tigers racked up five extra-base knocks against the right-hander, including four home runs. German also hit two batters, as he clearly struggled to command his pitches. This was easily his worst outing of the spring, as he had allowed just three runs (and no homers) over 7.2 innings before the blow-up. With that in mind, German is still expected to have a spot in the rotation when the season begins, especially with Carlos Rodon (forearm) expected to miss multiple starts.
