Pittsburgh currently envisions using Underwood as a multi-inning reliever. Acquired from the Cubs in early March, the 26-year-old could get a look as a starter if he continues to pitch well. He started in 125 of his 160 minor-league appearances.

Pirates acquire pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. from Cubs Underwood Jr., 26, was a second-round pick of Chicago in 2012 and made his MLB debut in 2018.

Shipped to Pittsburgh Underwood was acquired by the Pirates from the Cubs on Sunday in exchange for prospect Shendrik Apostel.

Impact The right-hander was designated for assignment by the Cubs last week and will get a fresh start in the NL Central with the Pirates. Underwood appeared in 17 games last season and had a 5.66 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB over 20.2 innings.

Impact Underwood is the roster casualty as the Cubs officially add recent signing Ryan Tepera to the roster. Underwood owns a 5.20 ERA in 36.1 career innings at the big-league level, but his 27:6 K:BB in 20.2 frames last year was quite strong, which could make him a fairly interesting option on the waiver wire.

Impact The Cubs have parted ways with Yu Darvish, Jon Lester, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood this offseason. The team did acquire Zach Davies in the Darvish trade and decided to bring back Jake Arrieta, but there are still innings to fill behind staff ace Kyle Hendricks. Underwood has made 30 appearances for the Cubs the past three seasons but only one of them was a start, so he's likely more of a longshot rotation option at this point, but his status will likely become clearer during spring training.
