Stepping up at third base Alvarez is starting at third base Friday against the Pirates and is expected to see more playing time down the stretch, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Impact GM Kim Ng and manager Don Mattingly recently indicated they wanted to see Alvarez receive more opportunities for the final couple weeks of the season, and they have apparently followed through on those statements since Isan Diaz was optioned to the minors Friday. Alvarez in 2-for-18 in eight games this season but should see regular time at the hot corner going forward.

Swats first big-league homer Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in a 6-4 victory over Atlanta on Saturday.

Impact The 31-year-old has navigated a long path to the majors, and after going homerless in 41 plate appearances last season, he slugged his first big-league long ball off Charlie Morton in the second inning Saturday. It was just the second hit overall for Alvarez since being called up to the big club Sept. 7. He has never been a prolific power hitter -- Alvarez's career high for homers in a minor-league campaign is 12 in 2019 -- so fantasy managers need not rush to pluck him off the waiver wire.

Impact The 31-year-old infielder hit .288/.423/.441 with four home runs and two steals in 31 games at Triple-A. With Miguel Rojas (neck) and Jon Berti (concussion) banged up, Alvarez will provide some short-term depth.
