Earns first big-league call-up The Red Sox called Bazardo up from their taxi squad ahead of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Twins.

Impact The 25-year-old will be moving up to the big leagues for the first time in his career, but because he's being designated as the 27th man for the twin bill, he'll likely be headed back to the Red Sox's alternate site following the doubleheader. Bazardo will provide Boston with a fresh right-handed arm out of the bullpen Wednesday.

Optioned to alternate site Bazardo was optioned to the Red Sox's alternate site Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Impact Bazardo was added to the 40-man roster in November but was always a long shot to break camp in the big-league bullpen. He looked good in 73.1 innings of relief in the minors in 2019, posting a 2.21 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 29.6 percent strikeout rate, but those innings came at the High-A and Double-A levels, so he may need some more time in the minors before pushing for a major-league job.

Shielded from Rule 5 draft Bazardo's contract was purchased by the Red Sox on Friday.

Impact A 25-year-old right-handed reliever, Bazardo logged a 2.78 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB in 32.1 innings at Triple-A in 2019, so he is basically big-league ready. He has a chance to develop into a setup man in the coming years.
