Eli Villalobos - Dispatched to Triple-AThe Marlins optioned Villalobos to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactVillalobos was added to the Marlins' 40-man roster in November, but he'll miss out on a spot in the big club's Opening Day bullpen after giving up two runs on five hits -- including a pair of solo home runs -- and no walks over 4.2 innings in Grapefruit League play. The 27-year-old righty submitted a 2.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB while holding opposing batters to a .191 average over 78.2 innings in 2022 between stops at Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola.

Jerar Encarnación - Sent out from big-league campThe Marlins optioned Encarnacion to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactThe 25-year-old outfielder received the chance to make his big-league debut in 2022 but didn't distinguish himself over his 81 plate appearances for Miami, slashing .182/.210/.338 while striking out at a 39.5 percent clip. He'll likely be in line to spend most of the 2023 campaign at Jacksonville unless injuries to other outfielders open up a more extended opportunity in the majors.

Josh Simpson - Dispatched to Triple-AThe Marlins optioned Simpson to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactMiami protected Simpson from the Rule 5 Draft over the winter by adding him to the 40-man roster, but with only 12.1 career innings above the Double-A level under his belt, the 26-year-old southpaw was never considered especially likely to win a spot in the Marlins' Opening Day bullpen. Between stops with Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola in 2022, Simpson logged a 3.97 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 112:34 K:BB in 68 innings.

Alex De Goti - Sent out to minors campThe Marlins reassigned De Goti to minor-league camp Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactDe Goti, who caught on with Miami on a minor-league deal in December, is expected to open the season at Triple-A Jacksonville. The 28-year-old infielder previously appeared in two games at the big-league level with the Astros in 2021 but spent the entire 2022 campaign with Houston's top affiliate in Sugar Land, slashing .253/.352/.377 with nine home runs, eight stolen bases, 69 RBI and 77 runs across 577 plate appearances.

Eury Pérez - Misses out on Opening Day rosterThe Marlins reassigned Perez to minor-league camp Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactThe Marlins' top pitching prospect won't be included on the Opening Day roster, but the 19-year-old right-hander remains a candidate to make his MLB debut in 2023 if he stays healthy and continues to excel at the upper levels of the minors. Perez was hit hard in spring training -- he surrendered nine earned runs, 14 hits and two home runs in 10.2 innings -- but his control was solid (10:2 K:BB) in his limited sample of action. Miami hasn't indicated whether Perez will return to Double-A Pensacola to begin the campaign or if he'll report to Triple-A Jacksonville.

J.J. Matijevic - Chance to make rosterMatijevic has gone 8-for-28 with a double and a home run during Cactus League action.
ImpactMatijevic made his brief big-league debut in 2022, during which he hit .209/.254/.328 across 71 plate appearances. He's capable of playing both first base and outfield, which makes him a candidate to benefit from the potential absence of Michael Brantley (shoulder) to begin the campaign. Barring more injuries, Matijevic would be in line only for a reserve role.
