Seven strong in quality start Happ (5-4) won Thursday's 5-3 game with Detroit, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in seven innings.
Impact Spinning his second quality start in three turns, Happ surrendered a two-run home run in the fourth and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth while permitting a single run. He departed down 3-2 after pitching a clean seventh, but Minnesota rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to give the veteran left-hander the win. The outing was Happ's first of at least seven innings since April and the eight strikeouts represented his second-highest tally.

Impact Minnesota staked Happ to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the veteran southpaw quickly squandered it, serving up long balls to Salvador Perez in the second and Hanser Alberto in the third. Happ has been taken deep at least once in seven straight starts, posting a woeful 6.88 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 3.2 HR/9 over that stretch despite a superficially solid 29:10 K:BB through 34 innings.

Impact Happ earned his first win since May 29 and had his first quality since April 28. The 38-year-old southpaw allowed a leadoff homer to Rene Rivera in the third and another run on a base hit in the sixth but struck out the final two batters he faced. His seven punchouts were the most since he had 10 May 23. He still owns an ugly 5.83 ERA and has a 55:23 K:BB over 71 innings but lines up for an enticing matchup against the Royals later in the week.

Impact The veteran lefty needed 108 pitches (60 strikes) to record 14 outs, and Happ's line could have been worse if Luke Farrell hadn't gotten Eugenio Suarez to fly out with two men on to close out the fifth inning. Happ hasn't lasted longer than five innings in any of his last five trips to the mound, posting a 7.23 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, 18:9 K:BB and ghastly 3.4 HR/9 over 23.2 innings during that stretch.

Impact Happ gave up at least a run in three of the four innings he pitched. Things went south fast after he gave up a solo home run to J.P. Crawford to lead off the first. He then loaded the bases in the second after allowing the first three men to reach before Sammy Long found the gap in right center for a bases-clearing triple. Two more runs came around to score before Happ's day was all said and done. He has really lost his groove after an excellent start to the season with a 9.84 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 28:10 K:BB over his last seven starts. His next chance to take the mound is expected to come at the beginning of next week at home against the Reds.
