Good to go for spring training Padres manager Mike Shildt last last week that Musgrove (shoulder) will not have any limitations in spring training, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact San Diego's new skipper revealed that Musgrove has already thrown some bullpen sessions and even faced some hitters and has bounced back with no issues. The veteran right-hander missed the final two months of last season with right shoulder inflammation and also dealt with elbow bursitis earlier in the year. Musgrove was highly effective in 2023 when on the mound, collecting a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 97:21 K:BB over 97.1 frames. It's certainly encouraging that it looks like he'll enter spring training with no limits, but Musgrove will remain a health red flag going into 2024.

Impact Musgrove has been on the injured list since early August due to inflammation in his right shoulder. He was able to resume throwing last Friday, but with the Padres officially eliminated from playoff contention, his focus has shifted to getting ready for 2024. Musgrove's spot on the 40-man roster will be filled by Chandler Seagle, who was selected from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.

Impact Musgrove was eased off his throwing program in mid-September with San Diego apparently out of playoff contention, though the hurler clarified Friday that he was always going to resume throwing Sept. 23. However, the plan moving forward may have changed a bit with the Padres reeling off eight straight wins and getting to within four games of the final NL wild-card spot. They still have a pretty daunting task in trying to make up that ground with just over a week left in the regular season, but it appears Musgrove may ramp back up more quickly than expected if the team is able to cut further into the deficit. Heilbrunn reports that should the pieces fall into place and the Padres were to qualify for the playoffs, Musgrove would look to contribute out of the bullpen.

Impact The Padres officially shut Yu Darvish (elbow) down for the season Tuesday, and though the team hasn't made any statements about Musgrove's status, the right-hander's return from the 15-day injured list is considered "highly unlikely," given where he stands in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation along with San Diego's unfavorable position in the National League wild-card race. Assuming Musgrove isn't activated before the season ends Oct. 1, he'll finish his third year in San Diego with a 10-3 record, 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 97:21 K:BB over 97.1 innings.

Impact It will be the first time he's done any throwing since he landed on the injured list at the beginning of the month with right shoulder capsule inflammation. Musgrove will require several flat-round sessions before being cleared for mound work and it remains up in the air as to whether he'll make it back this season. Impact "Minor" shoulder soreness kept Musgrove from making his scheduled start Wednesday against Colorado, but the issue has now progressed into something that will keep him on the shelf for a considerable amount of time.
