Impact Oviedo added the variation at the suggestion of coaches, who noted the natural sink that he had on his four-seam fastball. He mixed the pitch in during his outing Wednesday against the Tigers, though he surrendered four earned runs on five hits across two innings. Nevertheless, Oviedo remains in the mix for a spot in the Pirates' rotation to begin the season.

Working as starter The Pirates are planning to use Oviedo as a starter in 2023, Rob Biertemptfel of The Athletic reports.

Impact Oviedo has gotten most of his big-league experience as a reliever, though he made seven starts in Pittsburgh to close out 2022 after being acquired by the team at the trade deadline. He posted a solid 3.23 ERA with 28 strikeouts across 30 innings in that span, and he is likely to make starts at some point in 2023. For the time being, he's on the outside looking in for a regular rotation spot, but he should be among the top candidates to fill in if injury or poor performance requires the rotation to be shuffled.

Impact Oviedo held his own against the postseason-bound Cardinals, but he received only one run of support and was forced to settle for the loss despite posting his second quality start in a row. Oviedo has become a regular part of the Pirates rotation since being acquired earlier in September and has an ERA of 3.04 in six starts with his new team. He is tentatively expected to make his next start in a rematch against the Cardinals in Wednesday. As it will be the final game of the regular season, the Cardinals could be resting their starters in anticipation of their opening postseason series.
