Bride looks like he'll get at least a short-term trial as the Athletics' primary third baseman after journeyman Matt Davidson failed to capitalize on the opportunity upon being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas last week.

Hitless in big-league debut Bride, promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day, went 0-for-3 in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Impact The 26-year-old hit ninth and drew the start at third base. Bride was wielding a red-hot bat with the Aviators prior to the promotion, posting a .392 average and 1.049 OPS across 14 games while drawing starts at catcher and every infield spot except shortstop.

Impact Multiple outlets reported Monday that Bride was headed to the big leagues, but Oakland waited until hours before Tuesday's series opener in Boston to make the transaction official. The Athletics sent infielder Kevin Smith back to Triple-A to clear room on the 26-man active roster for Bride, who has reached the majors for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old has produced a monstrous 1.024 OPS in 149 plate appearances between Las Vegas and Double-A Midland this season while seeing most of his starts as a catcher, but he could serve as more of a utility option during his stint with the Athletics. Bride has also picked up starts at first base, second base and third base in the minors this season.

Bound for big leagues The Athletics plan to call up Bride from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Tuesday's series opener in Boston, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.

Impact Since the Athletics have off Monday, Bride's promotion likely won't be made official until Tuesday. Bride is nominally a catcher, having converted to the position in the fall of last year, though he may see much of his time at the big-league level at the infield corners. He's swung a hot bat across the two highest levels of the minors over the last two seasons, hitting .291/.418/.474 with just one more strikeout than walk, though he's managed just a modest 14 home runs in 111 games. Only one of those 14 long balls have come at the Triple-A level.

Impact The move means Bride won't be available in the Rule 5 draft. He's spent most of his minor-league career at third base but made the majority of his starts in 2021 at first base. That increases the pressure on his bat, but he did manage a .265/.407/.424 line with as many walks as strikeouts in 78 games last season, albeit all as a 25-year-old in Double-A.
