Timely double in '23 debut Diaz, recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day, started at third base and went 1-for-2 with an RBI double in a loss to the Cubs on Wednesday.

Impact Diaz got his first big-league stint of 2023 off to a positive start, doubling home Tyler Wade in the fifth inning for the Athletics' first run of the game. The 22-year-old also held his own against big-league arms during his initial exposure to major-league arms last season (.265 average in 15 games), and with Oakland all in on evaluating young players, he could carve out a steady swath of playing time if he's able to make consistent contributions at the plate.

Called up, starting Wednesday The Athletics recalled Diaz from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. He'll start at second base and bat eighth in the series finale with the Cubs.

Impact The righty-hitting Diaz will immediately enter the lineup with the Cubs bringing southpaw Jordan Steele to the hill Wednesday, but given the lack of productive bats in the Oakland lineup, it's not difficult to envision Diaz carving out a full-time role versus right-handed pitching as well if he's able to capitalize in his early opportunities in the majors. After getting a brief cup of coffee in the majors in 2022, Diaz opened the campaign at Triple-A and slashed .273/.319/.455 with one home run and eight RBI over 47 plate appearances for the affiliate prior to getting the call back to the big club.

Being called up from Triple-A Diaz will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Impact Diaz has hit .273/.319/.455 over 11 games in the Pacific Coast League to open the season, and the 22-year-old infielder held his own with a .265/.294/.327 slash in 15 games with the Athletics in 2023. Diaz should receive regular playing time while with Oakland, but he's more a long-term fantasy option than someone managers should consider adding to their roster immediately.

Impact Though Diaz displayed impressive contact skills during his time at Las Vegas and Double-A Midland in 2022 and even acquitted himself well during his brief run in the big leagues late last season, the Athletics will have the 22-year-old open 2023 in the minors and afford him the chance to play regularly. Since he lacks major power and doesn't contribute as a base stealer, Diaz's fantasy upside isn't particularly high, but his stellar hit tool may be enough to earn him steady playing time in the majors at some point in 2023.

Impact Diaz will have the platoon advantage Sunday, but he'll also be facing Framber Valdez, who has been one of the most dominant starters in the league in the second half. Diaz, one of Oakland's best hitting prospects, figures to see time at first base, designated hitter, second base and third base while playing regularly over the rest of the season. The 22-year-old has lackluster defensive abilities but will test his power and contact skills against Triple-A competition.

Intriguing returns in Double-A Diaz is hitting .309/.354/.500 with 14 home runs and a 22:60 BB:K through 89 games for Double-A Midland this season.

Impact There was some concern about whether he would be able to sustain his productivity in High-A last year (.821 OPS) at a higher level of baseball, but he's done that and more. The power (40 extra-base hits) and the contact ability (15.6 percent strikeout rate) make Diaz an exciting hitting prospect despite his defensive limitations. Previously a third baseman by trade, Diaz has appeared there just seven times this year, as he's mostly played first base or served as the DH.
