Notches first save Romano struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his first save of the season in a 10-8 win over the Rangers.

Impact It didn't look like Toronto's closer would get in any work when the team fell behind 7-0 in the early going, but Romano wound up finishing out the largest comeback by a team on its Opening Day in 72 years. The right-hander is the clear top dog in the Blue Jays bullpen after racking up 23 saves in 24 attempts with a 2.14 ERA and 33.6 percent strikeout rate in 2021.

Impact Romano recently suffered a mild ankle sprain when he slipped while walking his dog, but he missed only a day of workouts before he was able to get back on the mound Friday. After completing a bullpen session without incident, Romano will face hitters Sunday, which seemingly clears up any concern about his availability for Opening Day. Manager Charlie Montoyo has yet to formally name a closer ahead of Opening Day, but Romano looks like the best bet for saves out of the Toronto bullpen after posting a 2.14 ERA while converting 23 of his 24 save chances in 2021.

Impact Romano has been dealing with a mild left ankle sprain, but the issue doesn't seem to be bothering him too much with just under a week remaining until Opening Day. He was able to exert full effort with normal velocity and movement Friday. The right-hander is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Sunday before appearing in a Grapefruit League matchup Tuesday, and it seems likely that he'll be ready for the start of the regular season as long as those two throwing sessions go well.

Dealing with mild ankle sprain Manager Charlie Montoyo said Thursday that Romano is dealing with a mild left ankle sprain, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Impact Romano recently slipped while walking his dog, but his injury isn't expected to impact his availability for Opening Day. Assuming the 28-year-old is fully healthy once the regular season gets underway in a week, he's in line to serve as the Blue Jays' closer after he converted 23 of 24 save chances with a 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 63 innings across 62 relief appearances last year.

Undergoes offseason surgery Romano had surgery to repair a torn left meniscus in early November, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.

Impact Romano noted that he was dealing with the injury down the stretch of the 2021 season, but he managed to pitch through it by receiving treatment. "Two weeks into the offseason I got an MRI showing the tear and we went down to Cleveland and got the surgery, got it cleaned out," said Romano. "Now we're six weeks out and it feels like a brand new knee. It's going to be nice to go out there and not have to worry about it." Romano will now turn his attention to his usual offseason throwing program in preparation for 2022.

Impact Romano entered in the eighth with two men on and two outs and got Miguel Sano to go down swinging to end the inning.
