Impact Wicks threw 33 pitches (22 strikes) in the outing. The Cubs haven't announced the next step for Wicks following Friday's appearance, but he'll presumably need at least one more rehab start to get stretched out some more before Chicago is comfortable bringing him back from the 15-day injured list and inserting him into the rotation. Ben Brown is currently filling in for Wicks as the Cubs' No. 5 starter, with his second turn through the rotation set to come Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Impact Wicks started throwing off a mound a week ago and has made it through several bullpen sessions without a setback. He may need to complete one or two additional starts at Iowa before being brought up to rejoin the Cubs. Wicks owns a 4.70 ERA across five starts this season with Chicago.

Impact Wicks pitched decently against a tough lineup, but the Cubs only managed one run in the 4-1 defeat. The lefty was ineffective with his pitches, needing 100 to retire his 14 batters, which kept him from completing five innings for the second straight start. Wicks does have an impressive 13 strikeouts over 8.2 frames this season, however. He'll carry a 4.15 ERA into his next outing, which is tentatively set for Friday against the Mariners, and aim to pitch a bit deeper into the contest.

Seems likely to make rotation Wicks appears to be the favorite to land the No. 5 spot in the Cubs' rotation to start the year, with Javier Assad shifting to the bullpen, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Impact Wicks, Assad and Hayden Wesneski have been competing for the last starting spot in camp, with the former doing enough to stand out. The lefty has a strong 2.60 ERA across 17.1 Cactus League innings, and he showed flashes of promise during his MLB debut last season. Wicks may endure some ups and downs as a young starter, though he has interesting fantasy upside as long as he remains in the rotation.

Could begin 2024 at Triple-A Wicks may be slated to start the season with Triple-A Iowa following the offseason addition of Shota Imanaga, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Impact Bastian notes that Wicks is likely competing with Javier Assad, Drew Smyly and Hayden Wesneski for the fifth rotation spot, with Imanaga, Kyle Hendricks, Justin Steele and Jameson Taillon already locked in. Assad, Smyly and Wesneski all spent time in the team's bullpen last year and could serve in swing roles as needed. For the 24-year-old Wicks to continue developing as a starter, the team may put him in the Triple-A rotation to begin the year, though he should be an option for the majors at some point after showing promise during his MLB debut in 2023.

Impact Wicks allowed a pair of home runs and was yanked after tossing 44 pitches, but Chicago still managed to win 10-6. This was the young lefty's worst start of his rookie season, as he came into the contest having allowed only 11 earned runs across his first 33 innings. The poor outing pushed his ERA from 3.00 to 4.41, though it was still a promising debut for Wicks. He should have the inside track on a rotation spot to begin the 2024 season.

Posts quality start in Sunday's win Wicks (4-1) got the win over the Rockies on Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings of work.

Impact Wicks was able to bounce back from his first rough outing of the year with his third quality start in six tries. He surrendered a two-run blast to Brendan Rodgers in the third and then Nolan Jones got to him with a solo shot in the sixth to extend the Rockies' lead to 3-1. The Cubs were able to respond with three runs in the sixth to take the lead and put Wicks in line for the win. The 23-year-old has been fantastic at preventing hard contact and had only allowed one home run prior to Sunday's outing. Wicks now owns a 3.00 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB in 33 innings and lines up to make one more regular season start against the Brewers.

Impact Wicks was inefficient -- in addition to the four walks, he also uncorked two wild pitches. This is the first time in five major-league outings that he's given up three runs or failed to complete five innings. The rookie southpaw is at a 2.67 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB through 27 innings. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Rockies.

Wicks has just six punchouts over 17.2 frames since fanning nine in his major-league debut versus Pittsburgh on Aug. 26, but that's been about the only unimpressive part of his production.
