Moves to 60-day IL Texas placed Leclerc (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Impact Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reported March 28 that the Rangers weren't expecting Leclerc to make his season debut until late May, but his move to the 60-day IL now implies that the reliever won't be ready to go until at least early June. Once he completes his rehab program for his March 2021 Tommy John surgery and is activated from the IL, Leclerc will vie for a key role in the Texas bullpen.

On track for June return Leclerc (elbow) is trending towards a return in mid-to-late June, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports.
Impact Leclerc underwent Tommy John surgery in late March of last year. He remains on a fairly standard timeline and should have the chance to be available for just over half the season. Once he returns, it's possible he pushes for the closer job, given that preseason favorite Joe Barlow doesn't seem to be anything special. Jonathan Hernandez will also return from Tommy John surgery around that time and could also challenge for the role.

Throwing again Leclerc (elbow) completed a bullpen session Wednesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Impact Fellow reliever Jonathan Hernandez (elbow) also got back on the mound Wednesday, as the two relievers are at similar spots in their respective recoveries from the Tommy John surgeries they underwent last spring. Leclerc and Hernandez entered 2021 as two of the Rangers' top candidates to close games, but neither will likely factor into the ninth-inning mix right away upon gaining clearance to make their season debuts at some point in the second half of the upcoming season. Joe Barlow hasn't been officially named Texas' closer heading into Opening Day, but he's the odds-on favorite for the gig after converting 11 of 12 save chances late last season.
