Impact Quijada's outing was his first in the big leagues since he underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2023. The left-hander struggled a bit with his control in throwing just nine of 17 pitches for strikes, but he faced the minimum three batters, as a leadoff walk was wiped out on a double play. Quijada pitched in the sixth inning Wednesday, though he could eventually work his way up to higher-leverage work if he's able to string together a series of effective outings.

Impact Since taking a pre-planned break from throwing for a week between late May and early June, Quijada has tossed a 25-pitch standard bullpen session along with the pair of sessions against live hitters. He's now nearly 13 months removed from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last season and appears to be doing well in his recovery. If Quijada continues to progress without any setbacks, he could rejoin the Angels' bullpen before the All-Star break.

Impact An MRI and multiple doctors' opinions in early May determined that Quijada needed the season-ending procedure. The lefty reliever is slated to miss about 12 months, so he could return around the middle of 2024. Quijada recorded four saves and five holds while posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 10 appearances prior to going down with the injury.

Impact Quijada sought a second opinion from doctors, and it appears that both groups recommended the reconstructive elbow surgery. The left-handed reliever will miss the rest of the 2023 campaign and he'll likely miss time to begin the 2024 season as well.

Even if no operation is deemed necessary, it's very likely the 27-year-old will miss more than the required 15 day on the injured list.

Impact Quijada told reporters that he felt sore when he woke up Friday. The left-hander also said he's undergone an MRI, but the results haven't been presented yet. The Angels will call up Chris Devenski to take Quijada's place in the bullpen before Saturday's game against the Brewers.
