Officially activated The Tigers reinstated Urena (groin) from the 10-day injured list Saturday.

Impact As expected, Urena is activated to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. He's only going to pitch a few innings, as he's been out since mid-July and isn't built up for long outings. It's not entirely clear what Urena's role will be for the remainder of the season, as he can't currently provide length as a starter but it's been a couple years since he pitched out of the bullpen.

Returning for short start Urena (groin) will return to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays but won't throw more than two or three innings, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact A groin issue has kept Urena sidelined since mid-July. He's been a starter all season but wasn't pitching deep into games prior to the injury, throwing no more than 4.2 innings in any of his last six starts. That may have been mostly due to performance rather than workload management, however, as he struggled to an 11.76 ERA over that stretch. Tyler Alexander is expected to follow him out of the bullpen Saturday.

He made the appearance on three days' rest rather than the standard four between starts, which would seemingly hint that the Tigers are leaning toward deploying him as a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen once he's activated. The need for the Tigers to build Urena back up for starting duty is lessened by the fact that he's on a similar recovery timeline as Matthew Boyd (triceps), whose impending return from the IL would allow Detroit to keep its six-man rotation intact.

Starts rehab assignment Urena (groin) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday and threw 13 pitches in a scoreless inning, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact It's not the type of length you'd expect from a starter to begin a rehab assignment, so it's worth keeping an eye on his workload in subsequent outings. Urena landed on the shelf with groin tightness in mid-July, and a shift to the bullpen would allow for a shorter rehab stint and quicker return to the majors since he wouldn't need to build up to a starter's workload. For now it's unclear how the Tigers plan to utilize the right-hander once he's healthy.
