Impact Melendez has been a boom-or-bust hitter in his last 13 games -- he has three multi-hit games and 10 hitless efforts in that span. He's offset some of those struggles at the plate by posting a 10:12 BB:K in those contests. The rookie is slashing .228/.323/.395 with six home runs, 18 RBI, 16 runs scored, eight doubles and a triple through 192 plate appearances. Impact Garrett got the last out of the fourth inning and stayed in for the fifth after an ineffective start from Jonathan Heasley. In seven outings in June, Garrett has allowed six runs in 4.2 innings, though he's given up multiple runs in two of those appearances while giving up no runs in four. The southpaw is still struggling with consistency halfway through the year, which has seen him post a 6.38 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB across 18.1 innings. Walks have long been a problem for Garrett, but he's allowed 7.4 BB/9 this year, by far the worst mark of his career, which has wiped out the benefits of a .238 BABIP.

Impact Isbel will stick in the lineup for the third straight time the Royals have faced a right-handed pitcher, this time filling in for a resting Michael Taylor in center field. In Tuesday's 8-3 loss, Isbel drew the start in right field over Edward Olivares and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Right field looks like Isbel's most realistic path to steady playing time, and he could end up handling the large side of a platoon with the the righty-hitting Olivares. Manager Mike Matheny has yet to reveal his plans for the two outfielders since Olivares returned from the injured list last week.
