Jonathan Bowlan - Tommy John surgery ordered upThe Royals announced Thursday that Bowlan is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow next week.
ImpactThe procedure will likely sideline Bowlan for most, if not all, of the 2022 campaign as well. The 24-year-old right-hander is viewed as one of the top pitching prospects in the organization, and he was off to a hot start at Double-A Northwest Arkansas this season. Over his four starts spanning 17 innings, Bowlan posted a 1.59 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 25:3 K:BB.

Danny Duffy - Still restingRoyals manager Mike Matheny said Thursday that Duffy (forearm) is still resting, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports.
ImpactDuffy has been on the injured list since May 17 due to a left forearm flexor strain, and he hasn't made much progress in his recovery so far. While Duffy appears to have avoided a serious injury, he's been brought along slowly to prevent a more long-term issue. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to resume throwing.

Nicky Lopez - Not in lineup ThursdayLopez isn't starting Thursday's game against the Rays.
ImpactLopez will retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games after he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Wednesday. Whit Merrifield will start at second base while Jorge Soler takes over in right field. Lopez is still the likely favorite for playing time at second base, but he could see a slight downtick in playing time now that Adalberto Mondesi has returned to action at shortstop.
