Not expected back this season Hayes (back) is not expected to return before the end of the 2024 season, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact Assistant general manager Kevan Graves effectively closed the door on a return for Hayes, saying Sunday that he "wouldn't anticipate seeing [Hayes] competing on the field before the end of the season here," and adding that "it's just too short of a window." Hayes has been on the shelf since mid-August and he took a massive step backward on the field this season, slashing just .233/.283/.290 across 396 plate appearances.

Return unclear Hayes (back) is set to resume light baseball activity, MLB.com reports.

Impact Hayes has been sidelined since Aug. 19 and has been working to strengthen his core for a potential return. He is expected to start playing catch soon, though his return this season appears to be in jeopardy. The team has not officially decided whether Hayes will play again in 2024.

Impact Hayes landed on the 10-day injured list more than three weeks ago with a back injury that has nagged at him for much of the season. Shelton also noted Tuesday that, as of now, offseason surgery for Hayes is not under consideration. However, the third baseman is clearly not close to returning and at this point it's fair to wonder whether he will make it back at all this season. Jared Triolo has been operating as the Pirates' everyday third baseman since Hayes went down and will continue to hold down that spot.

Still being evaluated Hayes' back injury is still being evaluated and there remains no timetable for his return, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact The third baseman has been on the 10-day injured list on two occasions this season with back problems and the Pirates are still trying to get a better handle on the injury. Hayes is expected to return at some point during September, but his timeline lacks specificity. The 27-year-old is sporting a lowly .233/.283/.290 batting line this season.

Impact Hayes has been sidelined since Aug. 19 with back inflammation and has not resumed much activity. Despite the lack of progress, he should be back to man the hot corner at some point in the coming weeks.

Goes on IL with back inflammation The Pirates placed Hayes on the 10-day injured list Monday with low-back inflammation, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact It was reported earlier Monday that Hayes has been playing with a herniated disc in his back for much of the season, and this is the second time a back problem has landed him on the IL. It's not clear how much time he might miss. Jared Triolo figures to handle third base for now, although Isiah Kiner-Falefa could move there when Nick Gonzales (groin) returns.

Impact Hayes missed most of May with the issue, and while he's stayed off the injured list since then, it sounds like the discomfort hasn't really gone away. It could at least partly explain the 27-year-old's dreadful .233/.283/.290 batting line this season. There doesn't seem to be any talk at this point of surgery and/or shutting Hayes down, but perhaps that changes when/if the Pirates decide they don't have a realistic chance of making the postseason. Hayes has five more years left on the eight-year, $70 million contract extension he signed in April of 2022.

The 27-year-old has 11 extra-base hits through 270 plate appearances this season and will need to pick those numbers up in order to have a larger fantasy impact.

Resting for second game of twin bill Hayes is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Tigers.

Impact After being activated from the injured list Tuesday, Hayes had to wait a day to make his return to the lineup due to a rainout creating a doubleheader Wednesday. He started at third base and played all eight innings in the field in the Pirates' 8-0 loss in the first game of the day, going 0-for-2 with a walk. Hayes should settle back into an everyday role at the hot corner, but the Pirates won't have him play two full games in his first day back in the lineup.
