Throwing side session Wednesday Akin (COVID-19 injured list) will throw a side session Wednesday after he cleared the league's health and safety protocols, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact Akin spent a week on the COVID-19 IL and is now eligible to rejoin the Orioles, but they'll bring him along slowly since he wasn't able to do much recently. The young lefty posted an 8.19 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across his 13 appearances (eight starts) on the season, so he won't be a lock to reclaim a spot in Baltimore's rotation once reinstated from IL.

Shelled in short start Akin (0-5) took the loss against Kansas City on Friday, completing three innings and allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two.

Impact The Royals put at least one run on the board in each of Akin's three frames, and they crossed the plate four times in a big second inning. The southpaw needed 74 pitches to retire nine batters, and he has now given up at least four earned runs in each of his past seven outings. Given his 8.19 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and paltry 21.5 strikeout percentage, he doesn't carry much fantasy appeal. Akin is tentatively slated to next face Washington at home next Friday.

Impact After his expected appearance Thursday was rained out, Akin became available out of the bullpen leading into the All-Star break. The southpaw was called upon after starter Thomas Eshelman ran into trouble in the third inning Saturday. Akin then allowed a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, resulting in a so-so performance. Through 45.1 innings this year, the 26-year-old has a 7.54 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB. He may start the second half in the rotation, but he's hardly been successful as either a starter or bulk reliever this year.
