Impact Saturday marks Graveman's first time throwing off a mound since he underwent surgery on his right shoulder during the offseason. He was only able to throw 10 pitches during his first bullpen session, but it's certainly a positive step toward a potential return late in the season.

Impact Shoulder discomfort caused Graveman to be sidelined for the ALDS, and his condition has not improved since then. Impact Graveman becomes the fifth different pitcher dealt by the White Sox ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline. He finished the 2021 season in Houston, so this is a homecoming of sorts for the 32-year-old reliever, who figures to operate in a setup role ahead of locked-in Astros closer Ryan Pressly. Graveman had worked to a 3.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB through 44 innings this season with Chicago.

Impact Graveman entered trying to protect a three-run lead and was unable to do so. Impact Graveman was asked to protect a two-run ninth-inning lead and nearly blew it. Impact Per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Liam Hendriks was available but "playing it abundantly safe" in consideration of his lowered immune system given the unhealthy New York air quality caused by wildfires in Canada. As such, Graveman was called upon to close out Game 1 of the twin bill with Chicago clinging to a one-run ninth-inning lead. The right-hander made a bit of a mess for himself, allowing the first two Yankees batters to reach base before inducing a Gleyber Torres foul out and a game-ending Anthony Rizzo double play. Graveman has converted all six of his save opportunities this season while posting a 2.36 ERA and 26:11 K:BB, but he'll presumably yield most ninth-inning opportunities to Hendriks moving forward.

Impact This was the White Sox's first save situation since Liam Hendriks (illness) returned to action. Manager Pedro Grifol appears set to ease Hendriks back into action, especially after he struggled in his season debut, so Graveman's still an option for saves in the near term. The clean inning extended Graveman's scoreless streak to 12.1 innings since the start of May, a span in which he's logged all five of his saves while adding a 12:5 K:BB with just two hits allowed and two holds. The right-hander is at a 2.66 ERA, 0.93 WHIP an 24:10 K:BB over 23.2 innings this season, and he should remain in the high-leverage mix as long as he can continue posting numbers like those.
