Impact Yates was one of MLB's most dominant closers last season, compiling 41 saves in 44 chances while registering a minuscule 1.19 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. Things have gone much differently for the right-hander thus far in 2020, as he has been pulled mid-inning twice and given up four earned runs over 2.1 innings of work. Manager Jayce Tingler indicated that Yates will remain the closer after he nearly blew the save Friday night, though Drew Pomeranz was called upon to get the final out and earn his second save of the campaign. It makes sense for fantasy managers to hold onto Yates as long as he continues to get save opportunities, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look at Pomeranz as well since he appears next in line for closer duties if Yates is ultimately removed from the role.

Impact Called upon to protect an 8-5 lead, Yates retired two of the first three batters he faced but could not buy an out from there. Colorado went single, infield single, walk, walk against Yates with two gone in the inning before manager Jayce Tingler pulled him. Lefty Drew Pomeranz bailed Yates and the team out and Pomeranz has now secured two saves this week, but Tingler said after the game that Yates would get the ball in the next save chance.

Impact Pomeranz came into the game due to Kirby Yates' struggles, and he earned the save when he induced a Chris Owings flyout to center. The left-hander has not given up a run in five appearances this season, posting a 7:1 K:BB with two saves and two holds. He should remain one of the most important arms in the Padres bullpen this year, and he would be the first in line to take over the closer role if Yates' struggles continue.

The 29-year-old right-hander typically serves a depth role in the Padres' bullpen -- it's unlikely he'll be in the mix for even spot saves with a relief corps headlined by closer Kirby Yates.

Receives extra rest day Manager Jayce Tingler said Drew Pomeranz received Tuesday's save opportunity since Yates was receiving an extra day of rest, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Yates pitched on back-to-back days over the weekend and threw 28 pitches in his last outing Sunday when he gave up two runs and was charged with the loss, so Tingler opted to given him a couple days to refresh. The 33-year-old converted 41 of 44 save chances with a 1.19 ERA and 0.89 WHIP last season and appears to have a firm grasp on the closer's job, but it's still interesting to see Pomeranz receiving the Friars' first save opportunity of the season. Yates should be available going forward as the top option for the ninth inning after the strenuous opening weekend.

Impact Yates entered Sunday's contest while it was tied, but after striking out Arizona catcher Carson Kelly, he allowed four of the next five runners to reach base. The two runs Yates allowed were enough to stick him with the loss, despite the Padres' comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth. It's an unusually poor outing for the 33-year-old closer, who posted a 1.19 ERA and 0.89 WHIP across 60.2 innings in 2019. Both of his 2020 appearances have come in non-save situations so far.
