Impact Manager Dave Martinez said Sunday that Schwarber, Josh Bell and Josh Harrison could all be back in action early this week provided they received clearance by Monday. The Nats could certainly use three members of their expected starting lineup back after losing five straight games and getting shut out three times in the last four, but there's no guarantee the trio is able to shake off the rust quickly. Schwarber will take over in left field for Washington when he returns, hitting in the heart of the order, at least against right-handed pitching.

Heads to COVID-19 IL The Nationals placed Schwarber on the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

Impact Schwarber is one of nine Nationals players on the 40-man roster who will begin the campaign on the IL as a result of the team's recent COVID-19 outbreak. Prior reports have suggested that only four of the players in question have been confirmed to have tested positive for the virus, but it's uncertain whether Schwarber is one of the infected players or if he was merely a close contact. According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, players that tested positive will be eligible to return after 10 days in quarantine, while those ruled out through contact tracing can return after a week. With Schwarber thus set to miss at least the next 7-to-10 days, Andrew Stevenson is likely to take over as the Nationals' primary option in left field.

Impact Schwarber is among the nine members of the Nationals organization currently in quarantine because of COVID-19 protocols, though the club hasn't disclosed whether he's one of the four players who has tested positive or if he's merely a close contact of an infected individual. If the Nationals are able to play Monday against Atlanta, Schwarber is unlikely to be available for any of the three games of the series, and he'll be at risk of missing additional time beyond that, too. Andrew Stevenson and Yadiel Hernandez would presumably be the leading candidates to pick up starts in Schwarber's stead.

Making adjustments at plate Schwarber has worked this offseason to adjust his batting stance in an effort to handle balls low in the zone better, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Impact In college, Schwarber had more of a pronounced squat in his stance, but in the majors he's gradually straightened up to deal with high heat. After signing with the Nats, he met up with hitting coach Kevin Long and worked on a swing that attempted to balance the two approaches while also staying back a touch longer. Schwarber's power has never been in question, but an improved ability to make hard contact on the edges of the strike zone could get his batting average back into a palatable range without sacrificing home runs.
