Impact The 24-year-old had started spring with a performance reminiscent of several of his strong September starts last season, allowing just a solo home run and a walk across three innings versus the Guardians on Thursday. However, matters were clearly different Tuesday, with Kyle Isbel doing the most damage off Gilbert in the form of a three-run home run in the fourth inning. The right-hander should have at least one more chance to get the ship back on course ahead of a regular season that he'll open as Seattle's No. 3 starter.

Gilbert was able to get two more outs before walking Mark Canha, signaling the end of his day after 92 pitches. The 24-year-old right-hander found his stride during September, accumulating a 2.70 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 31:8 K:BB over 33.1 innings in six starts. He has certainly shown signs of living up to the hype as one of the Mariners' bright young arms. Gilbert now stands at a 4.68 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 128:28 K:BB over 119.1 innings. The Mariners are right in the fold of things for a potential wild-card spot and Gilbert could potentially see at least another start if they can secure one of the final two playoff spots.

Impact Gilbert had his way with the Royals, retiring 17 of the first 18 hitters he faced before allowing a double and a single in the sixth to give Kansas City their only run of the day. Sunday was his first win since July 30 despite owning a 2.01 ERA and 0.94 WHIP over four starts in September.
