Angels cut long-struggling lefty José Suarez, bring up Zach Plesac, activate Brandon Drury from IL

Struggling left-hander José Suarez has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels after his latest poor outing
JUNE 17ASSOCIATED PRESS
Nick Ahmed - Losing work to WiselyAhmed is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.
ImpactAhmed had served as the Giants' primary shortstop before landing on the injured list May 10 with a sprained left wrist, but he looks like he'll have to settle for a short-side platoon role now that he's healthy again. Since being activated Friday, the righty-hitting Ahmed has drawn two starts at shortstop -- both against lefties -- while the lefty-hitting Brett Wisely has occupied the position in two straight matchups with righties. Wisely has earned the larger portion of the timeshare at shortstop by slashing .313/.329/.478 over 23 games since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento.

Wilmer Flores - Taking seat MondayFlores is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.
ImpactFlores had started at first base in each of the Giants' last five games, with three starts coming versus lefties and two coming versus right-handers. Though the Giants seem content to deploy Flores as their primary first baseman rather than a platoon bat while LaMonte Wade (hamstring) is on the injured list, Flores will nonetheless give way to rookie Trenton Brooks on Monday.
JUNE 17ROTOWIRE
Kevin Pillar - Resting MondayPillar is not in the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the Brewers, Brent reports.
ImpactPillar will begin Monday's game in the dugout after starting in each of the Angels' last seven games. Pillar is slashing .340/.381/.594 with six home runs and 25 RBI over 106 at-bats with the Halos this season, though he's gone 9-for-40 since June 1. With Pillar on the bench Monday, Willie Calhoun will serve as the designated hitter while Jo Adell starts in right field against Brewers right-hander Carlos Rodriguez.
JUNE 17ROTOWIRE
Cole Tucker - DFA'd by HalosThe Angels designated Tucker for assignment Monday.
ImpactTucker will head to waivers after the Angels reinstated Brandon Drury (hamstring) from the 10-day IL. Tucker saw his playing time steadily decrease over the last month as he struggled at the plate, slashing .180/.263/.300 over 57 plate appearances. Tucker could garner interest via trade or waivers from teams in need of infield depth.
JUNE 17ROTOWIRE
Luis Rengifo - Out of lineup but availableRengifo (wrist) is absent from the lineup for Monday's game versus the Brewers, Michael Huntley of The Sporting Tribune reports.
ImpactRengifo exited Sunday's loss to the Giants with a left wrist contusion as a result of a hit by pitch. The super utility player said he'll be available off the bench Monday, so it would seem he'll have a good shot to return to the lineup Tuesday. Luis Guillorme is handling third base in Rengifo's stead.
JUNE 17ROTOWIRE
José Suarez - Designated for assignmentThe Angels designated Suarez for assignment Monday.
ImpactSuarez looked like he was going to be a solid mid-rotation starter for the Angels when he posted a 3.86 ERA and 188:69 K:BB over 207.1 innings from 2021-22. It's been tough sledding since then, though, with an 8.22 ERA over 29 appearances (eight starts). He also missed a large chunk of 2023 with shoulder problems. Still, as a 26-year-old that's shown promise in the past, there might be interest in Suarez via trade or waivers.
