The history of Giants' one-day contracts: Why Sergio Romo fits the formulaRomo may not be the biggest star in Giants' history, but like Ryan Vogelsong and J.T. Snow, he fits a special niche in team history.

Angels RHP Jose Marte (elbow) out at least 4 weeksLos Angeles Angeles reliever Jose Marte will be shut down for four weeks with a stress reaction in his right elbow, the team said Monday.

Wilmer Flores - Just okay during spring gamesFlores has gone 6-for-23 (.261) over eight Cactus League games.
ImpactFlores is a veteran, so there's not too much to read into his performance so far. He was delayed to begin camp while waiting for the birth of his son. Flores' ability to cover multiple positions should see him in the lineup regularly versus left-handed pitchers. His best path to playing time might be at second base on days where Thairo Estrada shifts to shortstop to cover a resting Brandon Crawford, who has been dealing with knee soreness this spring.

J.D. Davis - Bat looks ready for seasonDavis is hitting .333 with four extra-base hits over 12 Cactus League games.
ImpactDavis has also struck out 12 times, but he's making enough contact to look ready for the 2023 season. The 29-year-old is expected to back up David Villar at third base, and Davis could also see time at first base and designated hitter. As a right-handed hitter, he may have to settle for a short-side platoon role if his bat goes cold once the games start counting. He's still hit well enough to make it a tough decision on a daily basis for manager Gabe Kapler to fill out his lineup card.

José Marte - Shut down at least four weeksThe Angels announced Monday that Marte was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right elbow and will be shut down for at least four weeks, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ImpactMarte had yet to make his Cactus League debut due to what manager Phil Nevin and Angels director of sports medicine Mike Frostad termed as "soreness," but the right-handed reliever is evidently dealing with a more significant issue than the team initially led on. Given that he won't be able to resume throwing until late April or early May, Marte will essentially have to complete his own version of spring training before being ready to contribute out of the Angels bullpen. Bollinger suggests that Marte is a likely candidate to move to the 60-day injured list if the Angels need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for another player.

Patrick Sandoval - Starting in WBC semifinalSandoval will start for Mexico in Monday's WBC semifinal game against Japan, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ImpactSandoval will get a big spring test against a loaded Japanese lineup that will include Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani. This will be Sandoval's second start in the WBC -- in his first outing, he allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters in three innings against Team USA, who Mexico will face in the final if able to advance. The southpaw also got into two Cactus League games with the Angels prior to the WBC, allowing one run on three hits and posting a 6:0 K:BB over five frames.
