Gio Urshela - Will open season as starting SSUrshela will start at shortstop for the Angels on Opening Day, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

ImpactUrshela played only two games at shortstop with Minnesota last season, but he saw action there in 28 contests with the Yankees in 2021. The veteran will likely cede starts at shortstop to Luis Rengifo and David Fletcher (abdomen) occasionally, but he can also play all three other infield positions, so Urshela may have a near-everyday role with Los Angeles during the coming campaign.

Hunter Renfroe - Ends spring with blastRenfroe went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's exhibition contest against the Dodgers.

ImpactRenfroe hit the first of back-to-back homers off Ryan Pepiot in the third inning. The veteran outfielder's first spring with the Angels went well, as he finished the exhibition slate with a .289/.360/.600 slash line, four homers, nine RBI and a 5:5 BB:K. Renfroe will slot in as the team's starting right fielder after blasting 60 homers over the past two seasons.

Brett Phillips - Nabs roster spotPhillips appears to have made the Angels' Opening Day roster with Mickey Moniak and Jo Adell recently optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake, Rhett Bolllinger of MLB.com reports.

ImpactPhillips had a hard time offensively this spring, slashing .133/.235/.289 with 20 strikeouts in 51 plate appearances. However, both Moniak and Adell have one remaining minor-league option year, so the Angels ultimately decided to stick with Phillips as their fourth outfielder. The veteran slashed just .144/.217/.249 over 225 plate appearances last season, and he may need to show some progress offensively to keep a spot on the roster.

He'll likely have a significant role in the bullpen again during the coming campaign, and he could even see a save chance or two since Los Angeles isn't committing to a closer, at least at the start of the season.

Shelby Miller - Makes Opening Day rosterMiller will be part of the Dodgers' bullpen to begin the regular season, per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register.

ImpactMiller signed with the Dodgers on a minor-league contract last November. He was far from a lock to make the team after pitching in just four games last season and posting an ugly 8.92 ERA over 79.2 innings since 2018. However, the veteran showed some positives this spring, registering an 11:0 K:BB over seven frames (though he also gave up five earned runs). The Dodgers have a history of success with pitching reclamation projects, and Miller could be the next in line if he's able to carry over his spring success to the regular season.

Alex Vesia - Has up-and-down springVesia pitched in eight games for the Dodgers during Cactus League play, allowing five runs over six innings. He posted a 10:3 K:BB.

ImpactVesia racked up plenty of strikeouts this spring, but his ERA took a hit as a result of him serving up two homers. The lefty didn't have that problem last season, as he gave up only two long balls across 54.1 frames. Vesia was a major weapon for the Dodgers in 2022 with a 2.15 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 79:24 K:BB while recording 16 holds and two saves. He could see high-leverage work again this season and may even get a few save chances given the team's decision to go with a closer committee, at least in the early part of the campaign.
