Picks up win Friday Sims (1-0) walked two in a scoreless seventh inning Friday to collect the win in a 7-4 victory over the Marlins.

Impact The veteran right-hander entered the game with the Nationals down 4-2, but Sims was still the pitcher of record when Washington took the lead for good in the top of the eighth. Sims has seen a heavy workload so far, appearing in nine of the Nats' first 13 games, and he hasn't exactly impressed with a 7.11 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 5:5 K:BB over 6.1 innings. He's also picked up a hold in addition to Friday's win, but he seems a long way from getting regular high-leverage work.

Impact The veteran right-hander is a little behind the Nats' other relief arms after signing late, but his availability for Opening Day isn't in jeopardy. Sims is coming off a bumpy 2024 split between Boston and Cincinnati, but he posted a 3.10 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 72:39 K:BB over 61 innings for the Reds in 2023, and he figures to be in the high-leverage mix for a Washington squad with a very unsettled bullpen picture.

Impact After non-tendering Kyle Finnegan following a 38-save season in 2024, the back end of the Washington bullpen is unsettled, so Sims might have the opportunity to earn a high-leverage role if he impresses during the spring. The 31-year-old owns a 26.9 percent strikeout rate over 306 career innings, but a similarly high walk rate (12.1 percent) has thus far prevented him from gaining a full-time look as a closer. He's notched just 12 saves over parts of eight big-league seasons.

Impact Sims missed a little more than three weeks of time with a right lat strain but has been cleared to rejoin the Boston bullpen after making a couple rehab appearances with Triple-A Worcester. He's collected an 8.10 ERA in 11 outings for the Red Sox and will likely be pegged for middle relief.

Impact The Red Sox seemingly were in control late, but the bullpen -- Sims and Kenley Jansen -- allowed the Astros to tie then win the game in the final two innings. With two outs and the bases empty in the eighth inning, Sims allowed back-to-back hits that erased Boston's one-run lead. Sims was added at the trade deadline to help a faltering bullpen, and he's done fine when not facing the Astros. In three appearances against Houston while in a Boston uniform, Sims has allowed six runs on six hits and three walks over 3.1 innings.
