Closes first half with win Castillo (6-6) allowed an unearned run on five hits and struck out three without walking a batter over seven innings to earn the win Friday over the Astros.

Impact Castillo limited the damage to a third-inning RBI single from Alex Bregman, which came after a two-out error by Kolten Wong. Castillo had given up three or more runs in four of his last five starts before Friday's sharp outing. The right-hander concludes the first half with a 2.85 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 117:28 K:BB through 107.1 innings over 18 starts. He's likely to next take the mound in the All-Star Game in Seattle, and he could still be in line to face the Tigers next weekend following the break.

Stumbles against Rays Castillo allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits over six innings in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.

Impact Castillo eventually settled in to toss three scoreless frames after yielding six runs in the first three innings Sunday. He fired 70 of 95 pitches for strikes, including 19 whiffs, his highest total since June 9. The five earned runs charged to him tied his season high; he posted a 2.32 ERA in seven starts between Sunday's start and May 16 when he was tagged with five earned runs against Boston. For the season, Castillo is sporting a 3.14 ERA and an impressive 114:28 K:BB through 17 starts. His next start is projected to be in Houston.

Impact Castillo allowed a solo homer in each of the first and second frames but settled down thereafter and finished his outing by retiring the final seven batters he faced. The right-hander racked up an impressive 17 swinging strikes and tied his season high by completing seven frames. The victory snapped a personal four-game losing streak for Castillo, though he had maintained a decent 3.42 ERA and 1.23 WHIP during that stretch. Though the veteran's record is just 5-6 on the season, he's been very effective with a 2.86 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 108:28 K:BB over 94.1 innings.

Drops to 4-6 Castillo (4-6) took the loss against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three batters over five innings.

Impact Though Castillo yielded just four hits, two of those left the yard, and he also issued four walks. The last number is particularly concerning because it comes on the heels of the season-high six walks he issued against Miami in his previous outing. Prior to the pair of wild performances, Castillo hadn't handed out more than two free passes in any of his first 13 appearances of the season. The right-hander has now lost each of his past four starts, though that's partly due to poor run support, as he's posted a respectable 3.42 ERA over that span. Castillo will look to get back in the win column -- and to exhibit better control -- in his next outing, which is tentatively lined up to come at home against Washington.

Impact Castillo hadn't walked more than two batters in any of his starts this season, so it's safe to call this one an anomaly. Despite the lackluster control, he still turned in a decent effort, though it was also his third straight loss. All five of his losses have come in his last seven outings. Castillo still has an excellent 2.73 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP and 98:23 K:BB over 82.1 innings across 14 starts this season. He'll look to regain his command in his next start, tentatively scheduled to be on the road versus the Yankees next week.

Impact This was Castillo's second 10-strikeout effort of the season, both of which have come in his last three starts. All in all, it was a middling performance for the Mariners' ace, who now has a 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 92:17 K:BB through 76.2 innings across 13 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the Marlins next week.
