Settles down against Washington Bumgarner (1-2) gave up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five in five innings to earn the win against the Nationals on Sunday.
Impact Bumgarner had struggled mightily in his first three starts of the year and gave up at least five runs in each of those outings. However, he worked with pitching coach Matt Herges to adjust the left-hander's mindset ahead of Sunday's start. The work apparently paid off, as Bumgarner only allowed four Nationals to reach base in the first five innings Sunday. Bumgarner has now posted an 8.68 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 18.2 innings to begin the season. He'll attempt to stay on the right track on the road against Atlanta on Saturday.

Impact Bumgarner has been pounded through three outings and enters Sunday's start with an 11.20 ERA. As Herges described it, Bumgarner's focus during bullpen sessions is to use pitch-tracking data to make adjustments to specific pitches, but the coach wants him to focus on executing the next pitch. "He's elite in terms of the feel he has for what he's doing - his body, his mechanics - but I think the mindset is what we're working on, basically," Herges said. "If I had to just whittle it down, the mindset of making the pitch right here, right now." The coach wants Bumgarner to channel the pitcher he was in previous years and pointed to the final inning of his previous start Monday against the Athletics. In that inning, Bumgarner threw just three fastballs among 23 pitches, and that's not the way he pitched when leading the Giants two World Series titles.

Impact Bumgarner gave up runs in the first and the third to put the D-backs in a 3-0 hole. The wheels completely came off in the fifth, however, as he seemed to lose control of his command -- a walk, a single and a sac fly brought in two, then he hung a curveball that Matt Chapman smashed for a solo home run and hit a batter before being lifted. The 31-year-old owns an 11.20 ERA through three starts -- the worst among all qualified pitchers in the majors. He'll look to right the ship in his next outing against the Nationals on Sunday.

Some good, mostly not Thursday Bumgarner did not factor into the decision despite allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over four innings in Thursday's 8-7 loss to San Diego.
Impact Bumgarner escaped the loss when the Diamondbacks' bats heated up, but he permitted two home runs, grinded through innings two through four and needed 91 pitches for 12 outs. He did experience an uptick in velocity, averaging 90.3 MPH and topping out at 92.5, higher than at any point during the 2020 season, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. He also induced 14 swinging strikes and thought he pitched better than the results indicate. The left-hander is scheduled to pitch again next Wednesday at Colorado.
