Impact Bumgarner left his start Sunday against San Diego after allowing six runs in just two innings of work. His poor start to the season, which has seen him struggle to a 9.35 ERA through four outings, may be related to his back issues. The Diamondbacks are hopeful that he'll only miss a pair of starts. It's not yet clear who will replace him in the rotation, though Alex Young made 15 starts last year and would seemingly be a logical candidate.

Impact Bumgarner coughed up two homers in both the first and second innings, including two to Manny Machado. The 31-year-old lefty has had a brutal start to 2020, sporting a 9.35 ERA in 17.1 innings. His fastball velocity, which averaged a career-low 87.9 MPH over his first three outings, dropped even further Sunday when it averaged 87.1, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Diamondbacks pitching coach Matt Herges said before the start that more than diminished velocity, Bumgarner's being hurt by lack of location, which was an issue as well Sunday. He'll get a chance at revenge against the Padres at home Saturday.

He failed to get out of the sixth inning for a second straight start, but the left-hander authored a workmanlike effort on a night when his fastball averaged just 87.9 MPH, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "Neither of the first two games have been super sharp, but I haven't been able to tell a big difference with what I've got out there. Everything is moving the right way and spinning good. Impact Bumgarner's first start as a Diamondback was going fine until the sixth inning. The southpaw allowed a double to Fernando Tatis and walked both Tommy Pham and Jurickson Profar before Eric Hosmer's bases-clearing double ended his night. Bumgarner posted a career-worst 3.90 ERA in 2019 -- he's no longer a top-tier fantasy ace, but fantasy managers will expect better than what he showed Friday. The 30-year-old will next start on the road Wednesday against the Rangers.
