Impact After struggling in his Opening Day debut during which he gave up a career-high-tying five runs and three walks, Gonzales fell apart once again, this time serving up a pair of home runs while continuing to struggle with his command. Across 10.1 innings, the southpaw has allowed 12 runs and five walks, not quite the numbers you want to see. Gonzales will get a chance to turn things around with a road start next Thursday at Baltimore.

Impact Gonzales won't exactly head into his projected Opening Day start against the Giants on Thursday with much momentum, as he gave up a combined 11 earned runs on 18 hits, three walks and a hit batsman over his last two Cactus League starts. The left-hander did provide glimpses of his customary form in his first two trips to the mound this spring (six scoreless innings), so the hope is he was simply working through some kinks in these last two outings.

Named Opening Day starter Gonzales was officially named the Mariners' Opening Day starter Sunday, Lauren Smith of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Impact Gonzales will get the ball when the Mariners host the Giants on April 1. The lefty was a fairly clear choice for the honor, though the team could have handed the ball to former ace James Paxton, who returned to Seattle following a pair of seasons as a Yankee. Gonzales doesn't have the traditional strikeout stuff of an ace and probably wouldn't fill that role on a contender, but he's coming off a year in which he rode a roughly league-average 23.1 percent strikeout rate and a stellar 2.5 percent walk rate to a 3.10 ERA and can certainly help both big-league and fantasy rotations.
