Earns second win of season Gonzales (2-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Angels after giving up three runs on three hits -- all of them home runs -- while striking out seven across seven innings.
Impact Gonzales allowed homers to Max Stassi in the third, and both David Fletcher and Mike Trout in the sixth, but he was excellent the rest of the way while posting his second straight quality start. The long ball has been an issue early in the season, however, as he has already gave up four homers in just 17.2 innings. That's an area where he needs to improve ahead of his next start, scheduled for Aug. 11 against the Rangers on the road.

The southpaw ultimately allowed two of those runners to score with a throwing error, but manager Scott Servais was pleased to see Kikuchi's fastball reaching 96 mph and his offspeed pitches also showing improvement during the 55-pitch outing. "I thought he threw the ball pretty well. His stuff was really good and the velocity was up there," Servais said. "Hopefully he can build on that. All the guys so far -- Marco [Gonzales], Taijuan [Walker] and Yusei should be good to go. If things go well, I hope to get them through five innings their first time out."

Drayer reports the first run was partly manufactured by a Mallex Smith popup bunt, with the speedy outfielder subsequently advancing on Gonzales' errant offering. Gonzales also didn't allow much hard contact outside of a double he surrendered to Evan White, and he was efficient enough to reach his 50-pitch limit across four frames instead of three. It remains to be seen how long Gonzales will be allowed to go Opening Day against the Astros, but with manager Scott Servais planning a six-man rotation, it's likely his workload will be relatively abbreviated.
