Bounces back, notches save Melancon earned the save Thursday against the Mets after firing a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and one walk.
Impact Melancon was coming off two straight blown saves and while he bounced back in this one, it was far from a clean outing since he still allowed two baserunners. The walks have been an issue for Melancon of late, as he has issued five free passes with no strikeouts over his last three outings. Despite the recent struggles, he still owns a 0.71 ERA with 18 saves across 20 chances.

Blows second straight save chance Melancon was charged with a blown save Saturday as a result of allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk across one inning.
Impact Melancon has now blown two consecutive save opportunities, though it certainly bears mentioning that both chances came in extra innings and that the right-hander has allowed only the inherited runner to score in each instance. There's little reason to think that the Padres have lost any confidence in Melancon given the circumstances of the outings, especially since San Diego has ended up winning both contests. Melancon continues to lead MLB with 17 saves on the season.

Earns victory despite wild outing Melancon (1-0) blew the save but took the win against Houston on Friday, allowing an unearned run on three walks over one inning.
Impact After the Padres took a one-run lead in the top of the 10th inning, Melancon was called upon to shut the door in the bottom of the frame. He allowed the inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly and walked three batters but was able to get out of the inning having allowed only the unearned run. Melancon was then credited with the victory after San Diego exploded for seven runs in the top of the next frame. Still, it was a rare unimpressive outing for the right-hander, who tossed only 11 of 28 pitches for strikes and blew his first save of the campaign. He still leads the league with 17 saves and has posted a 0.77 ERA over 23.1 innings.

However, he went on to retire the next three batters he faced to record his league-leading 17th save of the campaign. Though he doesn't possess the typical velocity and strikeout upside of an elite closer, Melancon has maintained an exceptional 0.81 ERA and has yet to blow a save opportunity this season.
