Impact Payton was competing for a bench spot ahead of the regular season, but he won't break camp with the team even though Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) is opening the campaign on the 10-day injured list. Aristides Aquino and Tyler Naquin will serve as the primary depth options in the outfield to begin the year.

Impact Shogo Akiyama will begin the season on the IL, so the Reds would like to have another left-handed hitting outfielder, preferably one capable of playing center field. Tyler Naquin could also fill that role, and it's possible both could make the team.

Impact He'll pick up his third start in the Reds' five games since his callup from the alternate site last weekend. So long as Nick Senzel (undisclosed) remains on the injured list, Payton looks like he'll fill at least a semi-regular role in the Cincinnati outfield.

Impact Payton was selected by the Reds in the Rule 5 draft back in December, but he seemingly always faced long odds to break into a crowded outfield in Cincinnati. He'll now return to the Athletics' organization, where he hit .334/.400/.653 with 30 homers for Triple-A Las Vegas last season.
