Wallner and Buxton homer to back López as Twins finally win in New York with 8-3 victory over Mets

Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer and came within inches of another round-tripper as the Minnesota Twins finally won a game in New York by beating the Mets 8-3

Impact The lefty-hitting Wallner will hit the bench for the second time in three days while the Mets send a southpaw (Jose Quintana) to the hill. Wallner has been running hot at the plate lately, as he's recorded at least one hit -- including four extra-base knocks -- in each of his last five games while also drawing three walks.

Impact Wallner took Keider Montero deep in the second inning for one of four Twins homers on the night. Wallner has now homered in back-to-back games for the third time in his career and second time this month. After struggling early and being sent down in April, he was called back up in July and has four of his five homers on the year over his last 12 games. The 26-year-old is hitting .353 since his call-up in early July.

Impact Wallner was called up from Triple-A on Sunday and started in left field one day later. He belted a big homer in the seventh inning, clubbing a two-run shot to right field to tie the game 5-5. Wallner demonstrated his power potential last year with 14 home runs in 254 plate appearances with the Twins, and he has two long balls through 39 plate appearances this year but is slashing just .167/.333/.433.

Slow start this spring Wallner appears set to begin the season as Minnesota's starting left fielder, MLB.com reports. He's hitting just 1-for-10 in four games this spring.

Impact Wallner took over the starting left field job in the second half of last season, so his projection as a starter isn't a surprise. However, the larger question is how much he'll play against left-handed pitching. He crushed right-handed pitching last season by hitting .281 with 12 home runs and a .970 OPS against righties. However, he struggled against lefties by hitting .118 with a .481 OPS against southpaws (although just 46 PA).
